5 Signs It's Time to Hire a Rebranding Agency

Most of our rebrand enquiries start the same way: a founder tells us the business has changed but the website still looks like it did five years ago. Below are the five signals we actually watch for before recommending a full rebrand versus a lighter refresh, based on the projects we've run out of our Surrey studio for clients across BC and Ontario.

Your logo predates your product line

If your visual identity was built around a single service and you've since added three more, the homepage navigation usually shows the strain first. We see this constantly with trades and professional services firms that started as one-person shops. The fix isn't just a new logo file — it's restructuring the information architecture so new offerings don't get bolted onto a page hierarchy that was never designed for them.

Sales reps are apologizing for the website on calls

This is the clearest tell we've found. When a rep says "sorry, the site's a bit dated" before sharing a screen, the site is actively working against the deal. We ask new clients to pull their last ten discovery call transcripts or notes and search for phrases like "don't mind the site" or "we're updating that." If it shows up twice, that's a rebrand conversation, not a copywriting fix.

Your competitors' sites all look newer than yours

We run a quick competitive teardown before every rebrand engagement: screenshots of the top eight competitors' homepages, service pages, and about pages, laid out side by side. If a prospect can tell your site is the oldest in the set within three seconds, that's a real cost — B2B buyers use design polish as a proxy for operational maturity, fairly or not.

Your brand colours and fonts are inconsistent across channels

Check your website, your LinkedIn banner, your email signature, your proposal template, and your Google Business Profile. If you find three different shades of blue and two different logo marks, you don't have a design problem, you have a governance problem. A rebrand should ship with a locked style guide (colour hex codes, type scale, logo clear-space rules) that every department can pull from, not just marketing.

You've had a merger, acquisition, or leadership change in the last 18 months

Structural changes at the company level are the single most common trigger for the rebrands we take on. New ownership almost always wants the website to reflect the new entity's positioning, not the old one's. This is also the moment to fix technical debt while you're touching the design layer anyway — old redirects, orphaned landing pages from discontinued campaigns, and outdated case studies tend to pile up around leadership transitions.

What a rebrand engagement actually involves

A proper website rebrand is not a template swap. Our typical scope for a mid-market B2B client runs $18,000–$30,000 CAD and includes:

  • Stakeholder interviews (usually 5–8 people across sales, marketing, and leadership)
  • A messaging audit comparing your current copy against your three closest competitors
  • New visual identity or identity refresh (logo, colour palette, type system)
  • Full site information architecture rebuild
  • Content migration with 301 redirect mapping so you don't lose existing search rankings
  • WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility pass, which is now expected practice for Canadian businesses regardless of sector

The redirect mapping step gets skipped more often than it should. We've inherited rebrand projects from other shops where a client lost 40% of organic traffic in the month after launch because nobody mapped old URLs to new ones. That's a one-week task done properly and a six-month recovery problem done badly.

How long it takes

Plan for 10–14 weeks from kickoff to launch for a full rebrand with a rebuilt website, longer if you're also changing your CMS platform at the same time. We generally advise against combining a full rebrand with a CMS migration in a single sprint — it doubles the number of things that can go wrong during QA and makes it harder to isolate the source of a bug.

If two or more of these five signs sound familiar, it's worth a conversation before your next budget cycle locks in. We can usually tell within a 30-minute call whether you need a full rebrand or a more targeted refresh of specific pages.
